Ally McCoist fumes over ‘shocking’ Old Firm ‘disaster’ after Rangers win at Parkhead
Ally McCoist has launched into a furious rant at how the SFA has handled the aftermath of Rangers’ 2-1 win at Parkhead last month.
The Gers were hit with a sanction from the governing body yesterday, as per the Daily Record, with coach Michael Beale being specifically named in one complaint.
Alfredo Morelos was sent off in that game before making a throat-slit gesture as he left the pitch, while Ryan Kent came under fire for allegedly making a gun sign after scoring his side’s opener.
This led to some confusion yesterday as to whether or not the duo would be facing sanctions, although it would appear that they will not.
Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie was also given a retrospective two-game ban for making a grab at Morelos as the Colombian went to dribble past him in the fiery clash.
But it’s fair to say that McCoist was not too happy with the manner in which these disciplinary measures have been handled.
Speaking on Premier Sports, as per the Daily Record, he said: “Listen, it’s a shambles.
“The boy Ryan Christie, it’s an absolute disgrace what happened to him after that game.
“One of the problems is the fact the game was three weeks ago and there’s not been any football since.
“The press, the media, the fans – everybody still wants to talk about it.
“Why has it [the charges] taken so long? 19 days, that’s embarrassing, it really is.
“It’s one disaster, one mistake after another.
“I thought the Ryan Christie thing was shocking, I don’t know what was going on with that.
“Ryan Kent, what’s going to happen to Ryan Kent?
“Robbie Keane, one of the best goalscorers the country’s ever seen, made his celebration every week shooting fans and having a go.
“Morelos, clearly, I didn’t like it at all. But are you going to tell me Morelos was telling 10,000 Celtic fans he’s going to slit their throat?
“No, he’s saying the game’s over, the game’s finished. Let’s just get on with it.”
Is McCoist right here?
For the sake of simplicity, let’s not get into the minutiae of which decisions deserve punishment and which don’t.
You could maybe argue any single incident that McCoist has mentioned there either way, even if his appraisal of Christie’s grab does feel a little off.
What is certain, however, is that the SFA has once again shown itself to be indecisive.
Why has it taken so long to announce these charges against the Gers?
We’re nearly three weeks after the fact here, and yet we’re still having revelations and fallout from the match.
It looks unprofessional from the governing body, and it will do absolutely nothing to restore dwindling trust from supporters on both side of the Glasgow divide.
