Sunderland are eyeing up a double swoop of Rangers players, according to Football Insider.
The report suggests that the Black Cats are chasing both Greg Docherty and Jamie Murphy in an effort to boost their promotion hopes.
It is understood that the English League One side have tabled a loan offer for Docherty already, and have also registered their interest in 30-year-old wide man Murphy.
But while it is understood that Sunderland are in pole position to beat Charlton Athletic to the signing of Docherty, the Mackems could be pipped to the post by Burton Albion in their pursuit of his colleague.
Gers boss Steven Gerrard has made it very clear that he is keen for both players to go out on loan for the rest of the season in order to gain first team minutes, as per BBC Sport.
Is this double deal likely to happen?
At the moment, it feels as if Docherty is a lot more likely to be headed to Wearside than Murphy.
While it’s true that the 23-year-old is reportedly eager to move to the Championship, as opposed to spending another spell in League One after impressing at Shrewsbury Town last term, as per Football Insider, Sunderland could prove to be a good compromise.
He would still be in the third tier, true, but he would be playing for a massive club who are desperately chasing promotion in the upper reaches of the table.
As for Murphy, Burton look to have stolen a march on the Black Cats, but nothing is set in stone until the ink is dry on a deal, and much, much stranger things have happened than Murphy ending up in the north east.
