Alan Hutton claims transfer ‘priority’ could prove to be ‘massive’ for Rangers this month
Alan Hutton has claimed that it should be a “priority” of Rangers to get Borna Barisic tied down to a new deal this month.
The Croatian has impressed so far this season, notching 13 assists in all competitions, including two in December’s Old Firm win over Celtic.
The 27-year-old has also been linked with a potential move away this month, with the Sunday Post claiming that Roma are set to “dig deep” in an effort to lure him away from Ibrox.
In response to such speculation, Gers boss Steven Gerrard has suggested that the club have opened talks with the defender over a new deal, as per the Daily Record, and Hutton is all for the idea.
Speaking about the rumours surrounding Barisic to Football Insider, he said: “It doesn’t surprise me, I’m pretty sure they would have watched him in the European games and he’s really thrived at that level.
“He’s went from strength to strength really. He looks a real talent, Gerrard and Rangers know that so they’re going to try and tie him down to a longer deal, that’s a priority, but if a decent size bid comes in, then I’m pretty sure Rangers would have to think about it.
“[It’s] Massive, he brings so much to the team at a pivotal time in the league. They’d either have to have someone in the wings or a plan B if you like.”
Will Barisic sign a new deal?
Let’s hope so.
It sounds as if the club are doing everything they can to tie him down to something new, and given the start to the season he has put in, it’s not hard to see why.
Not only does he have all those assists – six more than he managed in the entirety of last season, by the way – but his all round game has say rocketed too.
There’s a reason why Andy Walker now believes he is the best full-back in Scotland, as per the Scottish Sun, and similarly, there is a reason why he is attracting interest from the likes of Roma.
Tying him down would be a major coup, and one that really made a statement about the Gers’ ambitions at both a domestic and continental level.
