Scottish boss rules out January swoop for Rangers talent after reported interest

St. Mirren boss Jim Goodwin has ruled out the possibility of his side making a move for Rangers winger Glenn Middleton in the current transfer window.

The wide man was recalled early from a loan spell at Hibernian after failing to make a single appearance under new manager Jack Ross at Easter Road.

The expectation was that he would then head out on loan again this month, but his chances of that are looking slimmer after picking up a foot injury in a reserve game on Monday evening against Motherwell, as per the Daily Record.

Prior to that setback, however, St. Mirren were amongst the clubs who had been linked with a potential swoop, as mentioned in the same piece from the Record.

But Goodwin has sought to quell those rumours.

As quoted by the Scottish Sun, he said: “We did make an enquiry for Glenn in the summer but unfortunately he chose to go to Hibs and that was that.

“We have moved on since then and it wouldn’t be something that we would be looking to do this window.”

What does this mean for Middleton?

In the grand scheme of things, this isn’t the worst news in the world.

Just because St. Mirren aren’t interested doesn’t mean that there aren’t other side who wouldn’t jump at the chance to bring in the youngster, with Ross County and NAC Breda both mentioned in the report from the Record too.

Far more concerning is this injury to his foot.

If that rules him out until the end of the month it could also rule him out of a move altogether, and that’s just about the last thing that him or the club would want.

He needs to be playing first team football to grow as a player, and that isn’t going to happen in the reserves in Glasgow.

Middleton needs a loan, and it’s going to be touch and go whether he gets one or not now.
