‘Game over’ – Gary McAllister speaks out on controversial Rangers incident

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos is never too far away from controversy.

Rightly or wrongly, the Colombian seems to attract trouble on the football pitch, and his disciplinary record in Scotland has reflected that.

Last season he saw red five times over the course of the campaign, and while he appears to have sorted himself out a little more this term, he has still been dismissed twice.

The latest of those reds came against Celtic at Parkhead a week and a half ago, and while the manner in which he was sent off – for a second yellow after a dive when he was through on goal – was entirely unnecessary, it was what he did after that has garnered the most attention.

As he walked off the pitch, Morelos seemed to make a throat-slit gesture towards home supporters, a move that led to Chris Sutton calling on him to be given a five-game ban, as per the Daily Record.

But the Gers assistant manager Gary McAllister has jumped to his defence over the incident.

As quoted by the Scottish Sun, he said: “I’ve seen Alfredo make the sign two or three times before.

“Even when we come to the end of games in training sessions, he’ll make that sign. It’s something he feels is ‘game over’, as it’s the end of the game.

This is obviously a bit of a tricky one.
If what McAllister is saying is true, then it changes everything.
You can see how Morelos’ gesture could simply be an innocent bit of baiting directed at a bitter rival with all three points already in the bag.
That being said, even if there was no malicious intent behind the gesture, you can’t argue that it was a stupid thing to do.
Given his reputation and given the level of scrutiny that surrounds the Old Firm, it was never not going to land him in hot water.
Perhaps we should give Morelos the benefit of the doubt here, but either way, he needs to learn from this.
