Report – Rangers make decision over reported swoop for 22y/o hitman
Rangers look to be taking a fairly cautious approach to their transfer business this January.
As opposed to going in all guns blazing in an effort to reinforce the squad for the second half of the season, the Gers seem intent on stripping away some of the deadwood and only making moves if they present themselves readily.
That is the message from sporting director Ross Wilson at least, as per the Scottish Sun, and it’s been reinforced by the club’s early activity in this window.
Serge Atakayi and Andy King have already gone, and according to a report from the Scottish Sun, Eros Grezda is also on his way out.
That’s not to say that nobody will be coming in at Ibrox over the next few weeks, but certainly, one man who appears unlikely to be on his way to Glasgow is Egyptian international Mostafa Mohamed.
The Daily Record cited sources from Africa over the weekend suggesting that the 22-year-old striker was the target of a proposed loan move from the Gers, with the report even going as far as to suggest that he had handed in a transfer request to force through a loan move to Ibrox.
But a fresh report from the same outlet on Monday claimed that the Bears are not interested in the player, essentially quashing any talk of him making the move to Scotland.
In truth, that might not be the worst thing in the world.
At the end of the day, the Gers have two of the best strikers in the Scottish game right now in Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe.
To supplant either of those two in the pecking order would take something fairly special, and if we’re being completely blunt, Mohamed isn’t it.
The forward has hit six in 15 so far this season, at a rate of one goal every 187 minutes, as per Transfermarkt.
There’s nothing wrong with that record per se, but when you compare it to the output of Morelos, or even Defoe, then you have to question whether this deal would have been the best idea in the first place.
A lucky escape, perhaps?
