Report – Rangers fall short in bid to lure PL starlet to Ibrox for bargain fee
Rangers have not shied away from poaching talent from the English Premier League in recent times.
Whether it be loan swoops for the likes of Jermain Defoe and Sheyi Ojo, or permanent moves for the likes of Steven Davis and Ryan Kent, the Gers have made good use of the market south of the border to enhance their squad and their title credentials.
But the competitive nature of transfer dealings at the highest levels of the English game mean that they can’t always get their man.
And that appears to be the case with their efforts to land West Ham youngster Conor Coventry.
According to a report from Football Insider, the Bears were keen to lure the 19-year-old to Glasgow for a bargain fee, with his contract set to expire in east London at the end of the season.
Instead, the Republic of Ireland youth international opted to agree an extension with the Hammers, which was announced towards the end of last week.
That deal now runs until 2023, all but guaranteeing that he will not become a Ger at any point in the near future, but at the very least, there are some positive signs about Rangers’ intentions in the transfer market here.
There is a real hotbed of young, exciting talent in England that can often slip through the cracks due to the sheer volume of options available to some of the bigger clubs.
Ryan Kent is a fine example of this. The winger is a supremely talented player, but just fell beneath the standard needed to make it at Anfield.
Does that mean that he can’t do a job at Ibrox though? Of course not.
In fact, you could argue that he has the potential to be one of the most potent attacking threats in the Scottish game.
It stands to reason, therefore, that there will be others like him who could be tempted north of the border if their Plan A doesn’t work out.
Missing out on Coventry is a shame, but the blueprint behind the Gers’ interest is certainly worth exploring further.
