‘Let him go’ – Noel Whelan urges Rangers to allow 25y/o loan exit in January
Rangers have made it very clear that their primary aim in this January transfer window is to offload some of the deadwood from their squad.
As reported by the Scottish Sun, sporting director Ross Wilson has made it very clear that his priority is offloading players who are deemed surplus to requirements at Ibrox.
Amongst those who may fall into that category is Jordan Jones.
The winger has struggled to make an impact at Ibrox since arriving from Kilmarnock over the summer having been injured since the beginning of September.
The 25-year-old picked up a knee ligament issue in the first Old Firm clash of the season after a poor challenge on Mauritz Bauer that also saw him dismissed.
Since then, he has been linked with a potential loan move to Middlesbrough, as per the Daily Mail, and pundit Noel Whelan believes he should be allowed to go.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “There’s 18 members of that [Rangers] 25-man squad who are the core of the team and won’t be looking to exit.
“So when you’re looking at fringe players, in and around it… let him go.
“Give him football, that’s what you need to do, and Middlesbrough need players.”
At the very least, Jones needs regular game time to recapture the form that convinced the Gers to move for him in the first place.
With the likes of Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo, Sheyi Ojo, and Brandon Barker all ahead of him in the pecking order now, you would have to argue that he will struggle to get those opportunities in the second half of the season in Glasgow, and if that is the case, he needs to go.
At 25, he cannot be sat around twiddling his thumbs for the next six or seven months.
Whelan is absolutely bang on here.
