Athletic journo wouldn’t be surprised by Rangers making summer swoop for prolific hitman
Rangers aren’t exactly short on goals at the moment, are they?
Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe have already got 42 strikes between them in all competitions this season, and the Gers have outscored everybody but Celtic in the Scottish Premiership this term.
But there’s nothing wrong with wanting more, or with planning for the future given that Defoe is now 37 and Morelos continues to attract attention from a whole host of clubs, as per Football Insider.
And so the Ibrox faithful might be keen to hear the latest claim from The Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell.
According to the reporter, he would not be surprised if the Gers made a move for Dundee United striker Lawrence Shankland.
Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic, Campbell said: “Haven’t heard about Shankland [as a January signing] but wouldn’t surprise me if he was a target in the summer.”
If this is true then it could mean one of two things for the Gers.
Looking at it optimistically, bringing in Shankland alongside Defoe and Morelos would give the Bears the most potent frontline in Scotland by a considerable distance.
The 24-year-old has hit 21 goals in 22 games in all competitions so far this term at a rate of one every 88 minutes, as per Transfermarkt.
That’s a ridiculous record, and one that deserves to be given a chance at one of the biggest teams in the country.
The flip side, however, is that it’s hard to see the Gers making that kind of move for a player who is unlikely to come cheap unless their hand is forced.
In short, could it be that the Bears would only swoop of they sold Morelos?
It’s a very real, very frightening possibility, and one that fans will not want to consider, even for a second.
