Police confirm investigation into Morleos abuse following Rangers win v Celtic
Police have confirmed that they are investigating racist abuse that was allegedly thrown at Alfredo Morelos during the Old Firm game on Sunday.
Rangers won at Celtic for the first time in nine years after goals from Ryan Kent and Nikola Katic, and it was no more than they deserved after dominating the Old Firm clash for the second consecutive time.
Morelos didn’t score but was bright and sharp throughout and was unlucky not to get the goal against Celtic he so desperately craves.
He was sent off late on, after picking up a second yellow card for simulation, and after the game Rangers made a complaint that he had been racially abused by Celtic supporters.
The police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident, saying, “We can confirm we are investigating a complaint of racist chants directed at a Rangers player at the Celtic vs Rangers SPFL match. Enquiries are ongoing.”
Celtic have responded, saying, “We have received no reports of any racial abuse but would fully investigate any should these be brought to our attention.”
Morelos courted controversy after making a throat-cutting gesture as he was sent off but Rangers cleared this up quickly after the game, saying it was a common gesture in South America to signify “time up”.
Morelos was sent off in injury time and the ten men of Rangers held on easily to complete the historic victory.
It means the title is back in Rangers’ hands, despite being two points behind Celtic going into the winter break.
Rangers have a game in hand and all the momentum after the victory at Parkhead.
