Reliable journo claims Gerrard doesn’t trust Rangers duo after Old Firm win

Nobody could have argued with Steven Gerrard’s team selection yesterday after his Rangers side recorded historic win over Celtic at Parkhead.

The only real point of discussion going into the game would probably have been whether or not Steven Davis should have been thrown back into the side over Scott Arfield after his recent absence through injury, but he more than justified his inclusion with a stellar display.

Arfield was introduced later in the game, as was George Edmundson, but the boss decided to withhold his third sub, despite the likes of Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo running themselves into the ground for the cause.

And The Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell think he knows why.

Writing in a Q&A after the match, he said: “I don’t think he [Gerrard] trusts the likes of Ojo and Barker, and doesn’t want to disrupt the team too much when it’s so tense.”

If this is true, then it’s a pretty damning indictment of Barker and Ojo.

For Gerrard to name them on the bench in one of the biggest games of the Gers’ season knowing full well that he would rather not throw them into the action really speaks volumes as to how they are perceived at Ibrox.

It also doesn’t bode well for their future at the club.

Ojo in particular is in a strange situation, with the wide man only on loan from Liverpool.

Having failed to start a league game since the end of October, and with Aribo and Kent both thriving at the moment, it’s hard to see how he will force his way back into side, or for that matter, how he will convince the club to extend his stay beyond the end of the season.
