'Goodbye sweet prince' - These Rangers fans bereft at Monday transfer update

Things could have been very, very different for Serge Atakayi at Rangers.

The youngster joined back in 2016, and was promising enough to be given his first team debut as an 18-year-old a couple of years later.

Based on that kind of rapid progression, you would maybe have had him earmarked as one to watch for the Gers in the coming years, but instead it was announced that the 20-year-old will be returning to Finland to play for SJK Seinajoki, subject to international clearance.

The move will happen for an undisclosed fee, but it’s fair to say that there are a lot of fans who are both shocked and saddened by the news.

Atakayi was justifiably hyped by many as the next big thing, and if it wasn’t for a pretty serious ankle injury that has kept him sidelined for quite some time, who knows where his Rangers career would have ended up.

Steven Gerrard clearly saw something in him, but fate can be cruel sometimes, and his absence has really been his undoing in some respects.

It’s a shame to see somebody with so much obvious potential leave, but the only hope now must be that the club have been smart enough to include a sell-on or a buy-back clause in the transfer.

The forward could still kick on make it at the very top level, and if he does that, you either want a slice of the pie, or even better, first refusal on a return to Ibrox.

For now though, all that is left to say is good luck to a player who hopefully still has a big future ahead of him.

Here are some of the best reactions from disappointed Rangers fans…
