'Absolutely mental' - Thompson and Stewart fume over 'unforgivable' moment in Rangers win v Hibs
It’s a shame that in the aftermath of such a fantastic away win for Rangers on Friday night, much of the discourse has been dominated by the actions of one Hibernian supporter.
After Borna Barisic was fouled by Ryan Porteous – who justifiably was given his marching orders as a result – a glass bottle was thrown onto the pitch by one home fan.
Thankfully, it missed the floored Gers ace, but on another day, things could have been a lot different, and a whole lot worse.
And Sportscene pundits Steven Thompson and Michael Stewart have been quick to criticise the sorry incident.
Speaking on the show on Sunday, Thompson said: “A glass bottle, that is unforgivable.”
In response, Stewart added: “It’s absolutely mental.
“If that makes contact with a player, you could cause serious damage.
“I don’t know what’s going through people’s minds. It’s inexcusable.”
Both Thompson and Stewart are absolutely bang on here.
It’s almost as if there is a disconnect between certain fans and the players they are watching, insofar that they don’t recognise that the lads out on the pitch are people too.
They may be living the dream, they may be on decent money, but when all is said and done, they’re just doing their job out there, and nobody should be subjected to that kind of physical threat.
You wouldn’t throw a bottle at a postman or a bin man, so why is it okay to throw one at a footballer?
The answer, of course, is that it’s not, and the hope now is that Hibernian can identify the idiot involved and punish him accordingly to send out the message that these scenes are not welcome in the Scottish game.
