Ibrox View: Rangers must follow through on reported raid for wantaway 29y/o hitman

It’s an adage as old as the beautiful game itself, but the simple fact of the matter is that cliches are cliches for a reason, and goals invariably do win football matches.

As such, you can never have too many top level strikers in your squad, and you can never turn down the opportunity to snap one up when he becomes available.

Right now, Rangers are blessed to have one of the hottest talents the Scottish game has seen in many years in Alfredo Morelos, as well as a seasoned veteran of the game with more ability in his little toe than most players have in both feet combined in Jermain Defoe.

But one is heavily sought after, despite the Gers’ most stringent protestations, as per Football Insider, and the other is 37.

It makes sense, therefore, that Rangers might be looking at potential alternatives to provide them with long term options in attacking positions.

And one name that has been thrown up recently is that of Charlton Athletic striker Lyle Taylor.

According to Sky Sports, the Gers are keen on the 29-year-old, who has hit five goals in nine games in the Championship so far this term.

Any interest Steven Gerrard and his men have in the hitman will surely have only been exacerbated by the the latest update from Charlton boss Lee Bowyer too.

Speaking to The South London Press, he said: “Lyle has been offered a contract and he declined it.

“It’s his choice if he wants to sign it or not.

“We’ve offered him a good contract. Roland [Duchatelet, the club’s outgoing owner] offered him what we think is a good deal.”

If this is true – and why on earth would Bowyer lie about his star man wanting to leave? – then the Gers should be very interested indeed.

Taylor is a proper danger man, averaging 2.5 shots per 90 minutes in the Championship this season, as per Whoscored, and if Morelos were to leave, or Defoe were to come to the end of his career any time soon, then it would surely make sense to replace either one of them with a forward who is capable of getting himself into the same kind of dangerous positions that they thrive in.

If Taylor’s mutineering then this is an absolute no-brainer.
