Jordan Campbell: Rangers player linked with Ibrox exit would ‘prefer to stay’ in Jan

January could prove to be a busy month for Rangers, but perhaps not for the reasons that fans might be hoping.

As confirmed by Steven Gerrard during a press conference on Thursday, as shared to the Gers’ official Twitter, a number of players will be on their way out of Ibrox next month as the club looks to cut down on the size of its squad.

And while the boss didn’t go as far as to name any names, one player who is reportedly facing a particularly uncertain future is young defender Leon King.

According to a report from Football Insider made earlier today, Wolves are the latest English Premier League club to register an interest in the teenager.

King has yet to commit to a professional contract at Ibrox, despite turning 16 next month – the age at which he can do so.

But according to The Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell, the starlet’s future may not necessarily lie away from Glasgow after all.

Writing in a Q&A for the outlet, he said: “I don’t believe he’s any closer to signing a deal.

“Rangers have a wage structure in place for their academy players but English teams can offer so much money.

“I think he would prefer to stay but all depends on how much Rangers are prepared to push the boat out I think.”

If the Gers can persuade King to put pen to paper on a deal at Ibrox, it would be a real coup.

The youngster is held in incredibly high esteem by the club, and it’s always disappointing to see a starlet come through the academy then head off at the first sign of serious money from south of the border.

That’s not a judgemental statement, by the way, plenty of players go for the opportunities English football can afford too, and understandably so.

But when it comes down to it, staying put with the Light Blues and continuing his path towards the first team seems like the safest bet for King right now.

Only time will tell, but here’s hoping he commits his future to the Gers.
