Ibrox view: New contract news huge for Rangers on eve of massive Europa game
There were a lot of doubters about Steven Gerrard at Rangers. There were also people who said Jermain Defoe wouldn’t stick around.
Rangers have always had lies peddled about them and that’s not going to change anytime soon.
But Gerrard said what we knew all along in his press conference yesterday. Asked about a new deal that he is going to sign imminently, he said as quoted on the BBC, “It was a pretty simple decision. I’m happy here.”
The Rangers fans are very happy, too. The steps forward have been massive under Gerrard, to the point where Rangers absolutely dominated the recent League Cup final.
Celtic might have won that but looking purely from that prism is too results-oriented.
Rangers should have won and if that’s a snapshot of the two teams at the moment, we’ll take it and move forward in the Premiership.
That wasn’t the only bit of good news, though.
“Allan McGregor and Steven Davis’ deals are imminent,” Gerrard added. “They’re all agreed. They are two players I want around on a year extension on top of this year.
“Jermain’s is a bit different because he’s obviously a Bournemouth’s player until the end of the year. But it’s a similar situation in that we want him to stay around.”
All three players might be the wrong side of 30 but they’ve all proved they’ve got the talent, the fitness and the passion to play for Rangers through next season.
The spine of the team is in place, there are talented youngsters coming through and we’ve got Gerrard at the helm for the foreseeable future.
What a bounce to take into the massive Europa clash against Young Boys at Ibrox tonight.
