Gerrard delivers fitness update on Barisic ahead of cup final v Celtic

Steven Gerrard has delivered a positive fitness update ahead of the League Cup final between Rangers and Celtic on Sunday.

Rangers are preparing to play Celtic and looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2-2 draw with Aberdeen that saw them lose ground in the title race.

Left-back Borna Barisic was missing from that game and while Jon Flanagan did okay, Rangers need to be at full strength on Sunday.

The good news is that Barisic was back in training on Friday, albeit for a “light session”. Gerrard is going to give him until Saturday to prove his fitness, with the game due to play at 3pm on Sunday.

Talking in his press conference on Friday, Gerrard said, “Barisic did a light session today and we are hopeful. We will give them the best chance to make it and will wait to hear if they are ready to go. The players need to prove tomorrow in training that they are ready.”

He followed that up by saying that some of his players had “knocks and bumps” but that he was hopeful of having a full squad to choose from.

Celtic have their own injury problems, with Odsonne Edouard battling for fitness. His absence would be a big boost for Rangers, with replacement Lewis Morgan not scoring.

Both Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos are fit for Rangers and both have been in great scoring form this season. Morelos leads the way with 25 goals across all competitions.
