Gerrard confirms that key Rangers first-team star a doubt for cup final v Celtic
Rangers defender Borna Barisic is a doubt for the League Cup final against Celtic on Sunday.
He’s been nursing a foot injury but managing to play, but he was dropped for the game against Aberdeen on Wednesday.
Rangers dropped two points as they squandered a two-goal lead and Jon Flanagan played in Barisic’s place.
He wasn’t the worst player on the night but Rangers missed Barisic and they might have to do without him for Sunday as well.
Talking after the game, Steven Gerrard said, “Barisic is a doubt for Sunday. He was limping about yesterday.
“He has been receiving treatment today but at the moment he is a doubt.
“He’s had three or four kicks on his foot and has bone bruising there.” [Daily Record]
Barisic is the only key injury problem that Gerrard has, although Jordan Jones is likely to miss out as well. He hasn’t played since the last Old Firm clash back in September.
Celtic have their problems as well. Main striker Odsonne Edouard was missing again in their 2-1 win against Hamilton and replacement Lewis Morgan isn’t scoring.
If it came down to Barisic missing for Rangers and Edouard missing for Celtic, we’d take that as a trade.
Rangers will need to be a lot better than they were against Aberdeen, though, if they’re going to win the first piece of silverware of the Gerrard era.
A win would be huge and it would give the team a massive psychological boost going into the next Old Firm clash just before the winter break.
BT Sport are showing the game in the UK and are kicking off with coverage at 9am and running all the way through to 6pm.
