Ibrox View: Nicholas agenda clear in latest column about Rangers star
So, Charlie Nicholas, former Celtic striker is running down Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos while talking up Odsonne Edouard. What a surprise.
This comes after Morelos – who has already scored 25 goals this season – got his first goal for Colombia in a recent friendly against Peru.
Edouard has 13.
Steven Gerrard, Ross Wilson and Dave King have all come out and said Morelos won’t be sold in January whatever the price, with all three focussing on the Premiership title.
But that’s not good enough for Nicholas.
Writing in his column in the Express, Nicholas said, “Rangers can dream up whatever number they like for Alfredo Morelos.
“Dave King has said he wouldn’t sell him for £40m in January. Well, if Morelos is worth that then Celtic must be thinking Odsonne Edouard is worth £50m.
“We can all come up with numbers but unless a club is genuinely interested and comes up with a realistic bid then it means nothing.
“The bottom line is that Gers are not going to get anyone to bid anywhere near that. It would need to be a team that is really, really desperate.
“Morelos has been linked with the likes of Crystal Palace and Aston Villa but they won’t spend more than £25m for a centre-forward.”
So, what part of “not up for sale” does Nicholas not understand?
Morelos and Rangers are focussed on the League Cup final this week and it seems set-up for the striker to score his first goal against Celtic in the most important game of the season.
Morelos is on fire. He’s scored four in his last three Premiership games and five in the last four Europa games, against opponents like Porto and Feyenoord.
Wth two in the League Cup semi-final, it means he’s scored in the last eight games he’s played and no one would bet against him making it nine on Sunday.
Nicholas went on to say that Edouard could be the difference on Sunday. Well, sorry to tell you this Charlie, but Edouard is injured and could well be out for the final.
We don’t know the real value of Morelos – the amount that a club would be willing to pay. What we do know is that if he carries on scoring at this rate he could break records and clubs will be clamouring for him in the summer.
That there are no Premier League clubs currently trying to buy Edouard is very illuminating.
