View: Gerrard must play careful Rangers balancing act v Aberdeen

Rangers are closing the gap at the top of the Premiership. Joint on points, the goal difference is down to just one after the 5-0 win against Hearts at Ibrox on Sunday.

It means both Rangers and Celtic have conceded just eight goals all season, while Steven Gerrard’s men have scored 43 in 14 games.

They’ve hit top form just at the right time, with the Scottish League Cup final playing out from Hampden Park on Sunday.

Between now and then there’s a crucial round of Premiership fixtures. Rangers have it tougher with a trip to Aberdeen, who sit second in the table and are on a run of four wins and a draw after getting thumped by Celtic.

Rangers have the measure of them. They beat them 5-0 at Ibrox earlier in the season but Gerrard will need to do some careful balancing ahead of the cup final.

The good news is that Jermain Defoe was back for the Hearts game and he can lead the line against the Dons.

This will be the first big test of the depth of the squad and another win on Wednesday will prove they have what it takes to maintain a challenge and win the Premiership.

Gerrard knows he can’t take the foot off the pedal in the league, but also that we need players like Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent rested and at 100% for Sunday.

For Rangers, the season starts in earnest here.
