'Not really appropriate' – These Rangers fans tear into HRMC tweet

HRMC might not have many friends in this world but they’re doing their best to keep the big feud with Rangers fans going as long as possible.

The HRMC press office reacted to the sensational Times report that stated the tax office could have seriously miscalculated how much the Ibrox club’s old operating company owed.

The report claimed that could be as little as £20m wiping £50m off the debt – a sum that could have had a massive effect on the fortunes of the club.

Rangers were liquidated and demoted to the third division or fourth tier of Scottish football, from where they won three promotions in four years to get back to the top tier.

Rangers are now joint top of the Premiership with Celtic and vying for Champions League football that could help get them back to parity with their rivals financially.

However, the HRMC mistake could have directly led to the financial implosion at Rangers and the subsequent actions that led to a community being ravaged.

HRMC were adamant that they hadn’t made a mistake and sent a triumphant tweet that read, “As widely reported today and to clarify: HMRC won against Rangers’ tax avoidance in the Supreme Court, and did not miscalculate anything”.

We think their press officer might need some media training and the “we won” part of the tweet is wholly unnecessary. That’s not in dispute. What’s in dispute is whether they made a huge error.

And this was made clear by barrister Jo Maugham.

This is what the Rangers fans made of the terrible tweet…
