Filip Helander put in his best display in a Rangers shirt in the game against Porto in midweek and he was the Ibrox hero on Sunday when he scored the winning goal in a tight 2-1 win against Motherwell.

Helander, 26, arrived in the summer in a £3.5m move from Bologna and he’s starting to show the sort of form that pushed Steven Gerrard to spend that sort of money.

It wasn’t a good team performance on Sunday.

Gerrard had said ahead of the game that his side was better equipped to deal with Thursday/Sunday games this season, but that wasn’t shown this weekend. In fact, Helander himself said that while Porto was their best game of the season, Motherwell was arguably the worst.

“We didn’t click, we didn’t win enough duels and we made it difficult for ourselves,” Helander said.

“The organisation wasn’t as good as it was against Porto and that makes it difficult. We were as bad against Motherwell as we were good against Porto.” [Scottish Sun]

That makes the win even more important. Champions find a way to win games that look like they’re slipping away from them and the three points against Motherwell was huge.

It keeps Rangers up with Celtic, who are starting to show some worrying form.

And fans were delighted with the winning contribution from Helander, with one saying that he was an “international class defender”.

Another said he was the “best Swedish footballer to ever grace the Scottish game”. Which gets extra marks for top trolling.

Here are the best reactions to Helander’s display against Motherwell.
