Youssef Chermiti has been one of the strangest stories at Rangers in recent years.

Signed from Everton for around £10million in total, those at Ibrox expected magic from the very beginning.

Starting as a marquee signing under Russell Martin, the complete opposite transpired.

Chermiti looked like he had never seen a football in his life, and past evidence didn't help, given that he failed to find the net at Everton previously.

Danny Rohl replaced Martin and backed Chermiti, something that was repaid as he somehow finished the season with 15 goals.

After that rollercoaster year, though, he could now be packing his bags.

Derek McInnes is now in charge, and more importantly, he has Lawrence Shankland as well.

That is a straight swap, which could open the door to Chermiti moving on.

Foot Mercato has reported that Lyon are now interested in the Portuguese striker, after also looking at Hearts' Claudio Braga.

It's said that the Ligue 1 giants could bid under £17.1million, including bonuses soon.

There's no indication on how Rangers would respond to that, but they are locked in talks over his future.

What could actually save Youssef Chermiti at Rangers?

Surprisingly, it's also McInnes being hired.

Rohl may have played with a sole striker, but the new manager has always preferred having two men leading the line.

As seen with Shankland and Braga last season at Hearts, it can work to incredible levels in Scotland.

Chermiti could thrive with Shankland alongside him, and there were moments of magic in his baffling year that could persuade Rangers to stick by him.

The bicycle kick against Celtic, that ferocious volley at Falkirk and the hat-trick against Hearts and McInnes are just a snippet of what he can do.

Given Lyon aren't exactly putting together a huge offer, it may be smart for Rangers to keep Chermiti and back him to become even better than the 15 goals he scored last season.

Chermiti is now back at Auchenhowie with McInnes, so nothing will happen anytime soon as the new manager gets to grips with his squad.
