Why Vaclav Cerny to Rangers transfer has now been deemed a 'no-brainer'

Rangers continue to be touted with a possible transfer reunion with Vaclav Cerny.

The 28-year-old winger enjoyed a superb 2024-25 season with Rangers, scoring 18 goals and providing nine assists in 52 total appearances.

His form in Govan earned him a move to Turkish giants Besiktas last summer, leaving Wolfsburg on a permanent transfer.

Cerny has been in superb form for Besiktas too, scoring seven goals and chipping in with eight assists in 34 games last season.

However, with Derek McInnes desperate to sign a winger or two before the transfer deadline, Gers have been strongly linked with a swoop for their ex-star.

Whether there's a deal to be done is another question, but one former Rangers coach has pleaded with Ibrox chiefs to try and make it happen.

There's very few, if any, Rangers supporters who wouldn't wish to see Cerny back in royal blue.

McInnes' side is in major need of attacking invention, and that's precisely what Cerny would bring.

Perhaps the only issue he may encounter would be how he fits into a potential wing-back system under McInnes, but the Gers boss has also deployed a back four this season too.

Speaking via Go Radio, former Rangers player and coach Barry Ferguson has demanded Gers do everything in their power to bring the Czech international back to Glasgow.

"Yeah, no-brainer, if a deal can be done," Ferguson said. "He's a difference-maker, he's a top professional.

"He understands Glasgow, he understands what goes on here. He's been here before and he's a quality operator, so he ticks all the boxes for me."

So how has Cerny started the 2026-27 season with Besiktas, and does it suggest he'd hit the ground running again at Ibrox?

With the new Turkish Super Lig season starting this weekend, Besiktas open their campaign against Eyupspor on Sunday night.

However, they've already contested four Europa League qualification matches, and Cerny has appeared in every one of them.

He scored the winning goal in Besiktas' 1-0 victory over Hradec Kralove last time out, and grabbed an assist in a 1-0 win over FC Midtjylland in late July.

So, Cerny continues to keep up his impressive form in Turkey, and his form should be reminding Rangers chiefs just how much he could add to this squad.

With the move for Couhaib Driouech falling through, Ferguson's "no-brainer" claim on signing Cerny is only made stronger.
