Why Ryan Jack thinks Youssef Chermiti injury is worst-possible scenario for Rangers after transfer rejection

Ryan Jack is under no illusion that Rangers have suffered a hammer blow after Youssef Chermiti's injury.

There has been anticipation to see how the Bears would lineup this season after the arrival of Lawrence Shankland, particularly due to an anticipated strike partnership with Chermiti.

However, the 22-year-old was forced off after 36 minutes in the Gers' 2-1 loss to Hibernian on Sunday after he crashed into an advertising board.

Derek McInnes described it as an "impact" injury, which may be better than if it was ligament-related, as it has been revealed that the player has an issue with his knee now.

He left Ibrox in a protective boot and knee brace, and went for a scan on the issue this Monday, with details of the injury's severity yet to be revealed.

However, perhaps more importantly, Rangers have only just turned down a bid for Chermiti, one that some people may now think should have been accepted.

Rangers rejected a club-record bid from Galatasaray for Chermiti before the Hibernian match, which has sparked discussion among the fan base.

The Portuguese striker can be hit and miss for the Light Blues, but his form at the end of last season suggests that the club could have an elite talent on their hands.

With that said, some believe that the Gers should be asking for much more than the reported £22million, though now they are without a number nine, possibly for a while, and are without a big cash injection, too.

While speaking on Open Goal, Jack and Andy Halliday discussed why Rangers are now in a sticky situation after turning down the bid for Chermiti right before his injury.

Jack said: "It's bad for everybody. The club turned down a bid, he gets an injury, and Rangers probably need to sign another striker now."

Halliday replied: "I would've turned it down, but with a view of trying to get a bit more money and ultimately trying to let him go."

The suggestions are that Andrew Cavenagh and Co. would demand over £30m for the former Everton man, though the chairman already said they do not need to sell him this window.

Have Rangers got a new striker in mind?

Rangers are currently focused on their attempts to sign PSV's Couhaib Driouech, with full-backs also wanted at Ibrox.

A new centre-back could also join McInnes' ranks, as it is expected that the Gers will make more than 10 signings once the window is finished.

Cavenagh has stated he will not put a number on it, but at least three to five more signings are wanted at Ibrox, which doesn't rule out a move for a new striker.

That may all depend on how bad Chermiti's injury is, as Rangers already have Shankland, Bojan Miovski and Ryan Naderi in their rather large squad.

There have been no fresh reports linking Rangers to a striker, which may suggest the club are hopeful of Chermiti returning to action every soon.
