Derek Cornelius' loan move at Rangers did not work for any party.

The Canadian international looked to be staking a claim for a significant role but injury halted his time at Ibrox from November onwards.

Upon his return, manager Danny Rohl had snubbed him by sending him to train alone before allowing him to depart for the March international break early.

The 28-year-old's career ultimately stalled but he could now find a new chance in Serie A with Genoa.

For Rangers fans, after seeing him play just seven games due to injury, there will certainly be confusion as to why he may be an attractive prospect for a side in a top European league.

But, after his stop-start time at Ibrox, his stock seemingly hasn't faded quite as you would suspect and there could be a few reasons behind it.

Genoa could find a hidden upside with Derek Cornelius transfer

While Cornelius was a flop for Rangers during his loan spell, that could now be Genoa's advantage.

His reputation after an injury-hit season will certainly be much lower than when he made the switch to G51 and that could open the door to a cheaper transfer.

According to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Cornelius is one of the names that manager Daniele De Rossi is considering.

If De Rossi followed his time at Rangers, he would likely be put off making the move, but the Canadian international has been a standout performer for the Canucks at the World Cup.

The former Rangers loanee has started in all of Canada's games in the tournament, which has saw them make international history.

The North American side earned their first point, win and entry into the knockout rounds of the World Cup for the first time in their history.

And Cornelius has been a key part of that.

Furthermore, concerns over his injury history will unlikely be there. Cornelius' 2025-2026 season it the first time in a 10 year career where has faced a lenghty spell on the sidelines.

So, alongside Cornelius' displays with Canada, his previous injury history and his stock lowering while at Rangers, Genoa could find upside in a cost-effective move for the defender.

What Cornelius could offer Genoa that Rangers rarely got to see

At the World Cup, Cornelius has been a duel monster. He has shown he is not afraid to get stuck into challenges on the opposition.

Over his four appearances, he is averaging 9.26 duels competed in per match, where he wins 54 per cent of those duels via Sofascore.

At Rangers, supporters did get to see that, and at a higher rate. He averaged 11.40 duels per game in the SPFL, with a 64 per cent success.

However, due to his seven appearances, it was a quality that did not get highlight perhaps as much as it should have.

But, the consistency of his willingess to get defensively involved shows the type of defender he is, and that could be something the Serie A side are looking to add.

And, Genoa could take advantage of the situation that unfolded at Rangers last season.
