Rangers defender Olwethu Makhanya has Premier League clubs flocking to watch him play already.

The 22-year-old has been a revelation for Rangers since signing in this season's summer transfer window.

Having joined from MLS side Philadelphia Union, there were plenty of question marks over how he'd transition to Scottish football.

Indeed, the football played across the pond is vastly different to the product on these shores.

The South Africa international has passed the test with flying colours through his first 12 Gers games, however.

Now the Ibrox faithful aren't concerned about his ability at this level, rather, how soon it may take him away from them.

What has been said about Premier League interest in Olwethu Makhanya?

Makhanya has made seven Scottish Premiership appearances for Rangers, starting all of them and playing every single minute.

His latest outing came against Kilmarnock on Saturday, as Derek McInnes' side ran out 3-1 winners in Govan thanks to Ryan Naderi and Kevin Kelsy.

With Rangers now having clearly turned a corner this season, more and more eyes will be drawn to what's happening at Ibrox.

Makhanya's early exploits in Glasgow have now reportedly caught the attention of top clubs south of the border.

The Sun's transfer reporter Ekrem Konur claimed via X on Saturday that Sunderland and Brentford scouted Makhanya against Kilmarnock.

Both Premier League clubs are said to have had scouts watching him at Ibrox.

Konur does, however, claim that at this stage, his progress at Rangers is merely being monitored ahead of "future windows".

As a result, it doesn't seem like anything is majorly imminent regarding a transfer approach.

So, how good was Makhanya against Kilmarnock, and will Brentford and Sunderland's scouts be coming away from the game impressed?

Makhanya's Kilmarnock display may have worked in Rangers' favour

Given how excellent he's been this season, it's become an increasingly rare sight to see Makhanya put in just an okay display rather than a top one.

This is what he did against Kilmarnock, as he wasn't bad by any means, but equally his performance won't grab headlines like previous ones.

But given the context of Premier League scouts watching on in this one, it could be a blessing in disguise for Gers regarding retaining his services.

Per FotMob, Makhanya was unsuccessful with his lone dribble attempt, made zero tackles and won none of his two ground duels.

He won three of his four aerial duels, but also committed one foul, completed 84 per cent of his passes and was accurate on three of seven long ball attempts.
