When Dujon Sterling's contract at Ibrox expires as Rangers must get to work

Dujon Sterling is enjoying a resurgence at Rangers after an injury-hit campaign.

The right-back made just 17 appearances in all competitions for the Gers last season, but has already made 11 starts under Derek McInnes.

With the English defender influential to the Scottish manager's plans, fans will hope his injury issues are past him.

Sterling has had persistent fitness issues at Ibrox after signing in 2023.

The former Chelsea ace put pen to paper on the four-year contract back then.

Given how well the 26-year-old is now performing at the Glaswegian outfit, they should sit down and discuss an extension with him.

Why Rangers have no time to waste with Dujon Sterling

Sterling has been impressive at Rangers early on this season.

Speaking about the defender recently, Derek Ferguson said, "You look at Sterling, see the injury he has come back from and it's incredible because that can sometimes be a career-ending injury.

"He has come back and looks unbelievable. But it's suiting him because it's only one game a week."

In 2024, Sterling signed a contract extension at the Gers to keep him at the club until May 2028.

The Englishman will enter the final year of his contract at the end of the season and that's something the Govan side shouldn't let happen.

If the right-back can continue his fine form at the Glaswegian outfit, it wouldn't be surprising to see teams lining up to sign him for a bargain fee.

Unless the Light Blues convince him to commit his future at Ibrox, they may be forced into making a tough decision next summer.

What Derek McInnes will now want in January

McInnes' backline at Rangers is starting to look solid with Sterling, Emmanuel Fernandez, Olwethu Makhanya and James Penrice.

The Gers also have quality cover at full-back, with Ross McCrorie, Kosta Nedeljkovic and Tuur Rommens at the Scottish manager's disposal.

Ben Godfrey has also come on late in recent matches to shore up the Light Blues defensively.

What McInnes clearly lacks at the Govan side is depth at centre-back, with John Souttar surplus to requirements and Clinton Nsiala's departure confirmed.

In January, it would make sense for the Glaswegian outfit to sign another quality centre-half who can provide competition and cover at the back and embed himself into the team ahead of next season.
