What Celtic's signing of Kasper Hogh means for Rangers as SPFL arms race heats up

Celtic have sent a Kasper Hogh-sized statement of intent to Rangers and their title rivals.

After looking for all the world as though it was going to be one of Rangers or Hearts lifting the Scottish Premiership trophy in 2025-26, Celtic found a way.

Indeed, that's now five league titles in a row for the Parkhead outfit, with this one hurting more than most given how strong a position Gers were in to lift the title.

Derek McInnes has arrived at Ibrox with the sole mission to steal the crown away from their bitter Glaswegian rivals, and with seven new signings through the door, the intent to do so has been made abundantly clear.

But Celtic were never going to sit around and let Rangers strengthen with the likes of Lawrence Shankland, whilst doing little to no upgrading of their own.

And so, despite a slow start to the summer window for the Greens, they've now made one of the headline splashes of this summer's Scottish Premiership transfer window.

How much have Celtic paid to sign Kasper Hogh?

After two-and-a-half years producing some superb goalscoring numbers in Norwegian football with Bodo/Glimt, Hogh is now bringing his talents to the Scottish Premiership.

Bagging a player of his quality is a significant coup for Celtic, and the fee they've reportedly spent to secure his services highlights just how much they think of him.

Ibrox News has been debating who out of Hogh and Shankland will be under more pressure to succeed at their respective clubs in 2026-27.

However, as is being widely reported, Celtic are understood to have smashed their transfer record by spending £11million plus add-ons to land Hogh's services.

Celtic have confirmed that he will join them on a four-year deal subject to international clearance, whilst they also have the option to trigger a 12-month extension too.

So, what does this signing mean for Rangers ahead of the new season, and should it spring Ibrox chiefs back into further transfer action?

Why Celtic signing Hogh should accelerate Rangers' transfer business

Having scored 73 goals to Rangers' 76 in the league last season, it's perhaps been no real surprise to see them target upgrades in attack as a priority this summer.

With Hogh now through the door, he's Celtic's second new signing alongside striker Camilo Duran, who they acquired from Azerbaijani giants Qarabag.

What those two new arrivals mean for Rangers is clear: they have to make not just good, but some top defensive signings of their own.

Hogh scored 25 and 21 goals in his two full seasons with Bodo/Glimt, and clearly has the potential to repeat those sort of figures in Scotland.

Ben Godfrey has his sceptics among the Rangers support, and the imminent arrival of Olwethu Makhanya marks another significant gamble on a young and largely inexperienced centre-back.

Can and should Rangers trust that those two would be able to handle a player of Hogh's quality? If the answer to those isn't an immediate yes, then that's a big problem.

Emmanuel Fernandez could yet leave in a big-money exit too, and that would put even more pressure on those two as well as leaving McInnes thin on the ground for depth in the heart of defence.

So, Rangers may already have signed one centre-back this summer and be on their way to adding another, but Hogh is a big long-term threat now, and one that could cost Gers dearly in the title race if they can't find an answer to him.

Ibrox chiefs should be able to recognise this, and so Gers fans can expect Hogh's move to Celtic to act as a catalyst for further defensive reinforcements being made in Govan this summer.
