Bristol City star Tommy Conway is closing in on a £5million move to Middlesbrough amid interest from Rangers, according to The Mirror.

The national newspaper reported [8 August, page 53] that Burnley and Hull City are also interested in the 22-year-old, who is in his final 12 months at the Riverside Stadium after turning down a new deal.

It is understood that the Robins wanting the £5million up front is causing a delay, yet Boro are still expected to complete a deal for the Scotland striker.

Rangers to miss out on Tommy Conway transfer?

There was a lot of excitement when links first emerged during the January transfer window, with the Gers looking at the 22-year-old after his decision to turn down a new contract.

Conway has experienced two very solid Championship campaigns with the Robins, scoring 19 goals in 73 appearances, earning a call-up to the Scotland national team.

He was also included in the squad that travelled to Germany for Euro 2024 but was unable to gain any minutes on the pitch as Scotland were knocked out in the group stage.

As for Rangers, a new striker still looks to be a must-buy for Philippe Clement before the transfer window closes later this month, with a number of fans unhappy with Cyriel Dessers leading the line.

The 29-year-old notched 22 goals in his first season in Scotland, but with the likes of Lawrence Shankland offering much more at Hearts, his all-round play has been regularly slated.

Hamza Igamane has the potential to play an important role this season, with Danilo also returning from injury, but the Gers are calling out for a proper No.9.

While Conway is still a very young prospect, his Scottish links were expected to lead him to Ibrox this summer. However, it looks as though Middlesbrough are set to win the race and claim his signature.
