Russell Martin had been keen on bringing John Souttar from Rangers to Leicester City.

The Englishman currently finds himself in League One with the Foxes after departing Ibrox.

Things certainly didn't go well for the ex-Southampton boss in G51, and have that has been followed by early struggles at the King Power.

That has seen him continue to eye further additions to his squad ahead of the Tuesday transfer deadline in England.

Souttar has been a target for Martin this summer as Rangers learn the outcome of that hunt.

Who are Leicester City and Russell Martin set to sign?

There is no surprise that the ex-Premier League champions are on the lookout for defensive reinforcements.

Wout Faes looks set to depart before their transfer deadline, while Jannik Vestergaard has already departed.

That sparked interest in Souttar after Martin had worked with the 29-year-old in his brief Ibrox spell.

The Daily Record reported on Tuesday that the Scotland international is no longer the preferred target at the King Power.

Leicester are now closing in on the signing of Warren O’Hora from Hibernian.

A six-figure offer has been tabled and a deal looks set to go through before the window slams shut in the East Midlands.

That leaves Souttar's future hanging in the balance as the window ticks down towards its closing date.

Where does Souttar's future lie at Rangers?

The 1996-born defender has long been a regular in Govan after signing from Hearts in 2022.

Things have gone downhill somewhat in the past year as his performances have been frustrating at times.

That has prompted Derek McInnes to bring in Olwethu Makhanya and Ben Godfrey this summer to add to Emmanuel Fernandez at the back.

The depth in that position doesn't spell good news for Souttar as he looks likely to be stuck at Ibrox.

He will have every chance to rise back up the ranks, especially with the Gers struggling so much at the start of the campaign.

It is a far from ideal situation for the centre-back and one that could have been changed completely by a move to link up with Martin at Leicester.
