Ross McCrorie: How latest Ibrox arrival compares to James Tavernier
Ross McCrorie seems to be the player chosen to replace James Tavernier at Rangers next season.
Tavernier often came in for a lot of criticism throughout his time with the Gers, but for the most part, he was one of the most influential players season after season.
That was again the case last term, when the defender finished second in the scoring charts and third in the total goal involvements chart.
His exit from Ibrox was confirmed in the summer, leaving the Gers in need of a replacement.
McCrorie looks almost certain to be that player, with a deal for the Bristol City defender now officially finalised and announced by the Light Blues on Thursday.
However, how do his stats from last season compare to those of Tavernier?
What does Ross McCrorie thrive at?
Tavernier was often utilised more in the final third at Rangers than he was defensively, which is quite the opposite to McCrorie.
The latter averaged just 0.95 chances created per game, while Tavernier averaged 2.63 per 90.
Context has to be applied to some extent. Tavernier was more often than not on the side that dominated possession, while McCrorie simply wasn't.
But defensively, the Bristol City defender shows his strengths, which was also a big reason behind his call-up to the Scotland squad in March.
He averaged 7.38 duels won in the Championship last season, which saw him rank among the top 8.5 per cent of full backs, as well as having made 68 tackles.
Again, that saw him rank among the top 13.7 per cent of full-backs in the second tier of English football.
In comparison, Tavernier averaged just 5.48 duels won per game, and won 57 tackles in the Scottish Premiership.
Both have their strengths, though the differences also showcase how Derek McInnes may need to change the way that Rangers relied on their width.
What's next for James Tavernier after Rangers?
The veteran full-back has already been linked with several clubs after his exit from Ibrox, with England mooted as a potential destination.
Wolves have been strongly linked with the defender, despite having already signed Kieran Trippier in the same position.
However, given what he has done at Rangers, albeit without much to show for it in recent years, Tavernier seems highly unlikely to be short of suitors this summer.
Though given his age, he will need to pick carefully, given the fact that it could be his last career move.
