Rangers are preparing a move to sign NK Varazdin midfielder Leon Belcar in the January transfer window, according to 24sata.

The Croatian news outlet reported via its website (1 January) that the Gers have expressed interest in bringing the midfielder to Ibrox but will face stiff competition from Club Brugge and AZ Alkmaar.

Philippe Clement is preparing for another hectic month of transfer activity in Glasgow and is eager to strengthen his engine room with Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill a target as he approaches the end of his deal at Turf Moor [TBR Football].

Alex Lowry is widely tipped to be one of the first outgoings for the Light Blues as he also approaches the final months of his contract - the transfer merry-go-round is in full swing.

Rangers want to sign Leon Belcar

The Gers' financial woes are well-documented topic of discussion in Scottish football after Clement embarked on an extensive squad overhaul throughout the summer.

Now, with Rangers rooted 14 points behind Glaswegian rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, Nils Koppen will be called upon once again to be active in the winter transfer window.

Belcar has taken the Croatian HNL by storm this season - he has contributed three goals in 17 appearances for Varazdin from a deep midfield role and has helped his side sit only three points adrift of Dinamo Zagreb.

Although the Croatian Under-21 international fits the bill of acquiring cheap talent with the potential to develop at Ibrox, more problematic areas of the pitch need addressing.

Despite Cyriel Dessers' woes in front of goals this term, the forward is generating plenty of interest in January, with Ligue 1 outfit Saint Etienne reportedly leading the race for his signature [TEAMtalk].

Hamza Igamane has taken over the goalscoring burden, but there is no doubt a replacement for Dessers will be a priority should the Nigerian be shown the door at Ibrox.

Belcar would be an astute signing for Rangers, but the midfield is hardly high on the list of priorities for Clement.
