Rangers have confirmed the appointment of Derek McInnes, who Kris Boyd says is going to need some financial backing.

The former midfielder took Hearts within touching distance of the title last term, and replaces Danny Rohl at the helm.

Joining the club last October, Rohl was able to galvanise a downtrodden group at Ibrox.

This would ultimately not be enough, with his side blown out of title contention, but work was being done to build around him ahead of next term.

But in a matter of days, it was confirmed that Rohl would be moving on to RB Salzburg, with McInnes enticed to leave Hearts for Rangers.

Ahead of pre-season, former Rangers striker Boyd has offered his opinion on the appointment, suggesting that there is a clear direction for the club to head in next.

Ahead of McInnes' arrival, Rangers had already secured the signing of Hearts captain and talisman Lawrence Shankland.

Reuniting with McInnes just weeks after separating, he is seen as the man to lead the line as the Gers chase their first title since 2021.

"It's been a long time coming, I think 10, 11 years ago since he first spoke to Rangers when he was at Aberdeen," Boyd told Sky Sports News.

"I think he was very unlucky last season. He showed that he is a good operator in Scottish football and Rangers will be hoping he can continue to improve."

After missing out on the chance to fight for the title, the summer was always going to be an important one for the Gers, something backed up by Boyd.

"He's got a big summer ahead of him," he added on McInnes. "Rangers do need to get a good five or six players in. They have already started with Lawrence Shankland - you'd imagine there will be a few more to go.

"But from Derek's point of view, he will be absolutely delighted to get that contract signed and get to work."

With the transfer window in mind, the groundwork had been done ahead of a full season under Rohl, though the Gers have acted quickly and secured their man.

The next step is to put the last week behind them, and begin building for McInnes.

Rangers: Two Danny Rohl signings should fear for Ibrox futures under Derek McInnes

Are Rangers the beneficiaries of managerial swap?

Of course, a change in the dugout this close to pre-season is never ideal.

However, Rangers themselves can say they have benefitted from the situation.

Rohl leaves on good terms with the fanbase, with him handling the situation in a classy way, while there is no doubt about his potential as a manager.

However, he is not the finished article as a coach, and a club demanding instant success like the Gers simply do not have the time to develop someone at the helm.

Moving to a less pressurised environment, the move makes sense for Rohl, while Rangers have landed a man who knows all there is to know about the current landscape of the league.

And after taking Hearts ever so close to the title last term, he could well prove the difference in attracting talent to Ibrox this summer.
