Rangers explored a move to sign Samy Mmaee as they're keen on bringing the Dinamo Zagreb defender to Ibrox, according to TEAMtalk.

The news outlet reported on 10 January that with the club keen on a defender this month, they considered the Morocco international, but a move does not appear to be on the cards.

Earlier there was a chance that he could leave for more game time but new manager Fabio Cannavaro plans to use him in his squad.

Rangers need to bring in a new defender in January

Mmaee's Champions League experiences would certainly hold him in good stead should Gers have brought him to Ibrox.

The 28-year-old centre-back also has international experience with Morocco and given Hamza Igamane's presence in the squad, he would've found it easier to adapt as well.

It goes without saying that Gers desperately need a new centre-back in January with John Souttar, Leon Balogun and Neraysho Kasanwirjo all injured.

Even Dujon Sterling, who has recently filled in at centre-back, is injured and that only escalates the need for a new arrival.

With a move for Mmaee now looking off the cards, it remains to be seen where attentions turn for Nils Koppen and co.

There surely is plenty of work that needs to be done as multiple signings are required in the next few weeks.
