Rangers are in advanced talks to secure the summer signing of Jose Cordoba ahead of the transfer window at Ibrox, according to Chris Jack.

The Rangers Review journalist reported on Thursday (9 May) that the defender has emerged as a prime candidate for Philippe Clement as looks to strengthen his backline ahead of his first full season in Glasgow.

Clement and his recruitment team are looking to get the deal over the line to bring the Panama international to Ibrox as he expects to leave Bulgarian side Levski Sofia prior to the start of the next campaign.

Will Rangers and Philippe Clement sign Jose Cordoba this summer?

It has been clear for some time now that Clement simply has to add to his Rangers backline if he wants to mount a serious push for the Scottish Premiership title as his current options are nowhere near good enough.

While the likes of Ridvan Yilmaz and John Souttar have impressed in flashes, both James Tavernier and Connor Goldson's form has dipped over the course of the campaign and the Belgian simply can't rely on them week in and week out.

Partner that with the fact there is still plenty of uncertainty surrounding both Ben Davies and Leon Balogun at the moment as the veteran nears the end of his current deal while the Englishman is linked with the exit door and a new defender becomes a must-have.

Hopefully, the Gers will be able to convince Cordoba to make the switch to Scotland and he will hit the ground running in a Light Blue shirt. If he's a success, who knows what Rangers could achieve next season?
