Rangers would be getting "something different" to their existing striker options if they sign Bristol City forward Tommy Conway this summer, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Gers right-back was speaking to Football League World (18 June) and said that Conway would provide an outlet running in behind for the Gers, something he feels Cyriel Dessers and Danilo don't do.

Conway has been heavily touted to make a move this summer, with Philippe Clement's side reportedly locked in a transfer battle with clubs including Old Firm rivals Celtic to secure his signature (Daily Record, 11 June).

Hutton said of Conway: “I really like what I’ve seen from him so far, what he does is bring something different to Rangers.

“You look at Dessers and Danilo, they want to link up and have their back to goal, whereas Conway interests me because he wants to go in behind.

“They need someone like that, so it would be interesting to see whether they can get it over the line or not.”

Rangers must win transfer race for Tommy Conway this summer

One area in which the Gers certainly need reinforcements this season is up front, following a season that saw injuries and criticism aplenty for their current crop of strikers [Glasgow World].

Danilo and Sam Lammers were both signed last summer but the former endured an injury-hit campaign and the latter underwhelmed massively and was shunted on loan to Utrecht in January.

Lammers could make a return depending on how Philippe Clement sees him fitting into a new-look Light Blues side in 2024/25, if at all, but even that won't stem talks of the Gers needing additional firepower [Craig Moore].

Rangers Cyriel Dessers
Cyriel Dessers' profligacy in front of goal means Rangers might need a new striker this summer.

Top-scorer Dessers hit 22 goals in his debut season at Ibrox, but that didn't stop him coming under heavy criticism for some high-profile misses in crucial games as the Gers' title bid came off the rails [John Robertson].

Signing Conway, and beating arch-rivals Celtic to do so, would be a huge statement for Clement to make this summer, and could hand Rangers a crucial advantage ahead of next season's Premiership race.
