Rangers to test Kilmarnock resolve with David Watson transfer bid after Lennon Miller

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Derek Ferguson would like Rangers to see if a deal could be done with Kilmarnock for young star David Watson this summer.

The former Ibrox midfielder is delighted to see the club bring in Connor Barron from Aberdeen already and subsequently be linked with Motherwell teenager Lennon Miller after scouting him during the preseason [Football Scotland, 10 July].

Watson, 19, beat both his fellow young midfielders to the PFA Young Player of the Year award for last season after a breakout campaign where he made 45 appearances in all competitions.

And Ferguson is in full support of the prospect of building an "identity" at Rangers by targeting top domestic talent and wants that extended to the Rugby Park teenager.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: "I'd also like to see if we could maybe test the water with the boy Watson at Kilmarnock, who's a terrific player.

"Again another midfielder.

"You need that identity in terms of bringing in Scottish players."

Rangers signed young Aberdeen star and want Motherwell prodigy

Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen may be struggling to add established veteran signings thanks to difficulties in shifting Ibrox incumbents [Andy Devlin, 12 July] but have done a decent job securing young prospects.

Barron is arguably the top signing of the window so far and could slot in as a start under the Belgian this season.

Were the Light Blues able to follow up that move with deals to bring in Miller and potentially Watson as well it could sew up the central midfield for years to come so investigating both would be well worth it.
