Rangers to pounce now as Sunderland share Dan Neil announcement
The Gers are in need of reinforcements this summer after a dismal end to last campaign under Danny Rohl.
Frustration surrounded the Ibrox club as the final two games of the season became a straight shootout between Hearts and Celtic.
Lawrence Shankland has already come through the door on a free transfer and another could be on the cards in the near future.
Neil is soon to be available for nothing after spending the second half of the campaign at Ipswich Town.
The 24-year-old could prove to be a coup for the Light Blues, but only if they act as quickly as possible in the coming days.
Dan Neil officially released by Sunderland
There have been murmurings surrounding the Stadium of Light that their former skipper would be departing this summer.
The Englishman was replaced by Granit Xhaka last summer and has never quite recovered with his boyhood club.
That has prompted plenty of interest, with the Gers certainly in the race for his signature.
Links are only likely to step up in the very near future as Sunderland confirmed on Wednesday that Neil would be leaving at the end of his contract.
As part of their retained list, they revealed that the defensive midfielder, Dennis Cirkin, Bertrand Traore and Niall Huggins would be departing the North East.
Although this news was expected, there now needs to be some urgency from Rangers to get a deal over the line for the 24-year-old.
Rangers must make Neil talks count now
Rohl and Co. have proven that they can get a quick deal over the line when they need to.
A move for Shankland was no sooner reported in the media before it was signed and announced.
A similar attitude needs to be utilised after the midfielder was reportedly keen to speak to Rangers over a potential free transfer.
Alan Nixon previously reported that the prospect of playing in Europe with the Light Blues was an attractive prospect and could tip the scales in their favour.
Coventry City have also been keen, so securing a deal as soon as possible will be paramount after Neil's exit from Sunderland was confirmed.
