Rangers could have to pay Dundee roughly £400,000 in compensation after signing Lyall Cameron on a pre-contract, according to the Daily Record.

The Record reported on 3 February that after the Gers announced Cameron's signing for the end of the season once his Dundee contract expires, the two clubs will aim to agree a fee in the region of £400,000.

If a fee cannot be agreed for the 22-year-old, his move will go to a tribunal, but Dundee's compensation claims are weakened by the fact that their academy doesn't have 'elite' status.

Cameron heading abroad would have seen the Dees collect less than £400,000, but if they can strike a deal with the Light Blues, potentially including add-ons and bonuses, a tribunal could still be avoided.

Rangers ready to make the best of Lyall Cameron transfer

Had the Light Blues aimed to jump the gun and seal a deal to bring Cameron to Ibrox immediately, there's a good chance Dundee would have been able to squeeze much more than £400,000 out of them.

However, by delaying his move west until the summer when he's technically a free agent, the Ibrox hierarchy could save themselves north of six figures unless they are hit hard by a tribunal.

The Gers have come through a similar process after signing Connor Barron – also 22 at the time – on a free transfer from Aberdeen last summer, and he's proven to be a solid addition.

Barron's displays for Philippe Clement's side this term have shown that there is value to be had for the Bears in domestic transfers across the Premiership, and they'll hope Cameron can have a similar impact.

It remains to be seen if the Belgian is able to make further additions to his squad before the winter window slams shut, but once the summer rolls around, Cameron will be ready to make his mark at Ibrox.
