Jonny McFarlane has praised Rangers for their "smart" transfer business as the club close in on Connor Barron.

In a post on X [12 June], journalist McFarlane hailed the potential capture of the Aberdeen man as Philippe Clement looks to build his squad.

Rangers reportedly lead the race to sign Barron [Scottish Sun], who is prepared to fly home early from a holiday in Portugal to complete a medical at Ibrox.

The post, in response to The Rangers Review, who published an article by Chris Jack on the out-of-contract star's potential switch, read: "A smart signing for Rangers if they can get it over the line."

Connor Barron could be latest through the Rangers door

While available as a free agent with Rangers leading the race, Barron would notably require a compensation fee to Aberdeen as he is aged just 21.

He is also wanted by clubs in England and Italy, but is a proven Scottish Premiership player who could grow into the void left by Ryan Jack, with the Light Blues having seen him and John Lundstram depart for free this summer.

With 29 appearances in 2023-24, the youngster was nominated for the SFWA Young Player of the Year award.

Derek Ferguson has been among those to speak in glowing terms of the midfield man, claiming he was "very impressed" by Barron's displays at Pittodrie in the most recent season.

A considerable overhaul is required at Ibrox this summer with Clement under pressure to deliver a fast start, as the club aim to topple Celtic once more.
