Rangers have been linked with Sunderland's Anthony Patterson, but it is a move that does not make sense.

The Gers know how much work is needed this summer as they look to return to their glory days in Danny Rohl's second season in charge

Recruitment will play a key role in determining whether they can achieve that, with several areas of the squad set to be looked at and improved upon.

Signing a goalkeeper to replace Jack Butland looks set to be one of a handful of priorities.

But with Patterson linked with a move to Ibrox, the Light Blues are alerady at risk of an own goal.

Anthony Patterson is not the right fit for Rangers

Patterson fell out of favour at Sunderland after they achieved promotion back to the Premier League, with Robin Roefs now thriving.

As a result, he spent the season just passed out on loan at Championship side Millwall, and narrowly missed out on a place in the play-off final.

He looks set to be on the move again this summer, with Rangers linked with a move, though the reported £8million price tag could be an issue.

From a shot-stopping perspective, he would be a great addition, but goalkeepers for Rangers need to be more than capable with the ball at their feet.

And for Patterson, he fails to tick that box.

He completed just 50.9 per cent of his attempted passes last season, placing him in the bottom 13 per cent of Championship goalkeepers.

In comparison, Butland completed 70.2 per cent of his, showcasing how that would be a downgrade for that particular part of his game.

Rangers have clear goalkeeper call to make

Upgrading on Butland should be something that Rangers look to do, but not as a matter of urgency.

Instead, there are various other areas of the squad that need attention first, with goals a clear issue based on the previous campaign.

Mikey Moore is set to return to Spurs, leaving the Gers in need of a replacement in that department, with another striker likely to come in as well.
