Rangers' decision to not formalise their interest in Silas Andersen was the right one.

The Gers have been linked with the Danish midfielder for a considerable period of time.

However, when it finally came down to a transfer for the 21-year-old, they seem to have taken a step back.

Andersen looks set to join Portuguese side Sporting, with a five-year contract on the table and a medical set for 6 June, per Tipsbladet.

It may well be a case of bullet dodged for the Ibrox side, after details of the financial agreement with BK Hacken emerged.

Why the 49ers can't be blamed for Andersen miss

The Gers majority ownership, the 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh, can't be blamed for the Light Blues missing out on Andersen's signature.

The report states that the fee is an initial £6.4million deal, with a potential further £2.5m in add-ons.

The total figure would be £8.9m, which would have been the second highest fee in Gers history, only behind the £12m that they paid for Tore Andre Flo in 2000.

That could not be justified for a player who only has experience in the Swedish league, and made two appearances in the Dutch league.

Who could Rangers sign instead?

The Gers have a strategy that is focused on Scottish players, who understand what it means to play for the Glasgow giants.

While they are willing to break that for a top-quality star, Andersen does not leap off the page enough to satisfy that requirement.

Danny Rohl's side would be better off sticking to their principles, and trying to bring in a talent from the Scottish Premiership.

That figure in question is far too much for the former Inter Milan youth product.

Motherwell ace Elliot Watt is one midfielder from Scotland's top flight that has been linked and that would represent much better value for money, and he would not need to adapt to the division.

The call to avoid a deal for Andersen looks to be the right one, as he would cost too much for the G51 side to fork out on one player.
