Rangers want to sign Marseille defender Bamo Meite this month with a release voucher present, according to Saber Desfarges.

The Telefoot journalist reported on X (5 January) that the Light Blues and Montpellier are interested in the Ivorian on a "dry loan", albeit Marseille want to secure liquidity in any potential transfer.

Meite can play at centre-back and right-back yet has made just three appearances this term, with Marseille likely to recruit in both positions if he, Chancel Mbemba or Lillian Brassier move on this month.

The Light Blues need central defensive cover following John Souttar's recent injury and Neraysho Kasanwirjo's season-ending surgery, the latter having returned to parent club Feyenoord.

Bamo Meite transfer could be a risk for Rangers in January

It's clear that regardless of whoever is on their January wishlist, the Gers' priority this month is to fill the void left by Souttar and Kasanwirjo's injuries, which have forced Philippe Clement into drastic action.

A makeshift backline, featuring the left-sided Ridvan Yilmaz at right-back, destroyed Celtic in the 3-0 Old Firm thumping at Ibrox but were much less effective in Sunday's draw at Hibernian.

Hamza Igamane becoming the Bears' first hat-trick scorer since Kemar Roofe in 2022 was somehow not the major talking point at Easter Road – with that being another calamitous defensive performance.

Dujon Sterling's utility value is being utilised by Clement alongside Robin Propper in central defence, but it's clear that in the absence of Souttar – the Gers' best player this term – reinforcements are needed.

Meite's lack of game-time this term could see him struggle to immediately get up to speed, and having already seen Propper struggle so far, Bears fans may want the club to aim higher than the Ivorian.
