Rangers have been given a boost in their Carney Chukwuemeka chase after Enzo Maresca confirmed that he is expected to leave in January.

The Gers have been linked with a move for the 21-year-old in the winter transfer window as Philippe Clement seeks to strengthen his squad. [TBR Football, 3 December]

The midfielder moved to Stamford Bridge from Aston Villa in a £20 million move in 2022 but has failed to secure a permanent starting role and the Light Blues could benefit.

In his pre-Everton press conference (20 December), The Chelsea manager confirmed that the young star could leave next month, saying: "There are players who didn’t play a lot with us, like Chilwell and Carney… so probably they are the first who want to leave.

"We will try to find a solution”

Chukwuemeka update is positive for Rangers

The England under-21 international would be a quality addition for the Gers.

The ability he possesses would allow him to shine in the Scottish Premiership despite not featuring in the Premier League for the Blues.

The former Aston Villa man would bolster Clement's options in the middle of the park as he attempts to turn the Gers' season around.

Chuewuemeka is said to be open to leaving Stamford Bridge in January to secure first-team football and has been offered to the Light Blues and arch-rivals Celtic on either a permanent transfer or a loan deal.

Former Gers boss Steven Gerrard rated Chukwuemeka very highly when he was Villans manager and gave the central midfielder nearly half of his 37 Premier League appearances.

It has clearly not worked out for the youngster since his switch to the Blues and a move to Ibrox makes perfect sense for both parties.
