Rangers: Done deal as Jay Hogarth seals Ibrox loan exit in January transfer announcement

Rangers have confirmed that Jay Hogarth has joined Dumbarton on loan for the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper has yet to play for Rangers at senior level, but he has appeared in matchday squads in European competitions.

Dumbarton also announced the move on their Twitter account, while adding that Hogarth will be part of the squad to face Peterhead later on Tuesday [9 January].

Further experience

Hogarth is still in the early stages of his career, but first-team experience away from Ibrox will only benefit him in the long term.

The youngster appeared 33 times for Alloa in Scottish League One last season, so joining a team in League Two is a bit of a step down.

That said, this move is all about getting some minutes under Hogarth's belt prior to returning to Ibrox in the summer.

The problem he faces - as is the case with most goalkeepers - is that there is an established number one he must eventually usurp at Rangers.

And the bad news is that Jack Butland has been arguably the Gers' best player this season, or at the very least their best summer signing.

Robby McCrorie and Kieran Wright are also ahead of him in the pecking order, so it would not be a surprise to see another loan move later this year.

Having starred for the B team and trained regularly with the seniors, Hogarth's future is certainly a bright one. For now, his focus has to be on impressing at Dumbarton.
