Russell Martin has been overseeing his Rangers squad in pre-season, but now the real business is set to begin.

The Ibrox club opened their summer with a 2-2 draw against Club Brugge and have played four matches since then.

Now, Rangers are primed for a double header with Panathinaikos in the second round of Champions League qualifying.

The Gers have already made a host of new signings, and there could be more before the clash with the Greek outfit.

Rangers could make more signings ahead of Panathinaikos clash

Martin is set for his first-ever Champions League tie tomorrow (22 July) and will know who he wants to start.

The 39-year-old has had plenty of opportunities to see his squad in action and knows he must get a positive result in the first leg.

With Rangers playing at home first, Martin will want the home crowd behind him as the Glasgow club enters a fresh chapter.

The Bears travel to Greece at the end of the month

While they have already made a wealth of additions, there is every chance new signings could be made by tonight (21 July), according to Keith Jackson via the Daily Record (21 July).

Jackson said: "Of course, Martin could make as many as two further additions to his squad right up until Monday night's UEFA signing deadline for the double header, but even if he does welcome one or more new arrivals at the 11th hour, this whole project will absolutely remain a work in progress."

Martin signings must make instant impact at Ibrox

For the former Southampton boss' first competitive match, it would be some occasion to make your mark.

Of course, Martin must decide which of his new additions he wants to field in what will be a vital game.

Not only is there a chance to progress towards the Champions League group stages, but there will also be a significant sum of money riding on the occasion.

Panathinaikos will want to spoil Martin's occasion tomorrow, but he has had plenty of time to prepare for the meeting.
