Rangers challenge begins after Chelsea and Arsenal beaten to in-demand sensation signing

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Rangers completing a deal ahead of Premier League giants such as Arsenal and Chelsea for Hearts youngster Alfie Hutchison is only the start of the test for the youngster, says Derek Ferguson.

Fabrizio Romano reported via his Instagram story that the Light Blues had secured a deal for the Jam Tarts sensation ahead of interest from the London sides and Newcastle [Scottish Sun, 2 July].

Ex-Ibrox midfielder Ferguson is glad to see Rangers land the teenage winger but believes it takes a lot more than talent to survive in the taxing psychological environment at the club.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: "These young players, I've not seen them, but they come to Rangers for a reason.

"They're top players. There's talent there. But it's more than what you do on the park, it's how you handle everything that goes with it.

"Sometimes you get these guys that are going to be absolute world-beaters and for whatever reason it doesn't happen.

"So listen, we've got him. We've got him in the door. He'll be working with the coaches. It's just whether he can handle everything that goes with being a Rangers player.

"I'm all for young talent coming in where you can work them and trying to make them better.

"But sometimes I think they need a psychologist as well honestly to see if they can deal with everything that goes with it.

"Sometimes when they get to a club like Rangers they think they've made it and that's it. No, that's the time when you kick on so it will be interesting to see how that pans out."

Rangers also saw of Newcastle for Hearts winger

Rangers winger Ross McCausland
Rangers winger Ross McCausland is the only academy product featuring regularly in the 1st team.

There haven't been a great many sustained breakthroughs from the youth set-up in recent seasons, which may be a contributing factor to the lack of success at the club.

Ross McCausland is featuring for Philippe Clement but both Alex Lowry and Leon King have been tipped to leave before the close of the transfer window [Chris Jack, 16 August].

There will be high hopes for Hutchison, who scored in a youth defeat to Queens Park on 20 August, but far more senior arrivals such as Sam Lammers and Jose Cifuentes have wilted at Rangers in recent months and been sent packing again.
