Rangers will aim to clear out a lot of underperformers from their squad this summer, and Robin Propper could be one of the first to leave.

Propper only joined from FC Twente last summer but endured a nightmare season in Glasgow as he made several calamitous errors at the back.

Rangers need better defensive depth, and it is clear that the Dutchman cannot be relied upon even as a backup option next season.

The Gers will now make a loss on yet another failed signing, as Propper has already lined up his next club ahead of his exit.

Propper to return to Twente

Propper was Twente's captain when he moved to Ibrox last summer under Philippe Clement, but he failed to display any of the leadership qualities he showed in the Netherlands.

Less than a year after leaving Twente for Rangers, the 31-year-old now appears set to return to his old club, and has reportedly agreed on a contract.

According to a report carried by Dutch outlet Twente Fans Netherlands (6 June), Propper has agreed a three-year deal at Twente, who are set to pay Rangers a transfer fee to bring him back.

However, it is claimed that while Rangers paid £2.5million to sign Propper last year, they can expect less than half of that fee back, with Twente said to be paying around £1.2m to bring him back.

Rangers cannot afford more failed signings

Director Nils Koppen departed Rangers in recent days as the new majority shareholders aim to rebuild the club, and it is easy to see why.

Koppen recruited Propper last summer, claiming that he knew the player from his own time in the Netherlands, but this was another case of Rangers wasting resources.

Rangers have thrown away a lot of money on failed signings in recent years, with Oscar Cortes another whom they may have to make a loss on, and this is simply not sustainable in the long run.

The Gers now need to make smarter signings under Kevin Thelwell, and they will hope Russell Martin is the right manager to lead them to success.
