Philippe Clement to wheel and deal as Rangers get Ben Davies off wage bill to Birmingham City

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Ben Davies leaving Rangers to Birmingham on loan is a good move that should allow Philippe Clement to make signings before the deadline, says Derek Ferguson.

An agreement has reportedly been reached, with 4 Lads Had A Dream reporting later the same day that only "last minute disasters" could derail the move and Chris Jack of Rangers Review reporting that the 29-year-old will sign the deal.

Ex-Ibrox midfielder Ferguson feels the move is one that should work out all round and allows the Light Blues to offload a player who has never prove himself suitable for the Scottish Premiership.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: "Yeah, good move. I think Ben struggles physically. He's a good footballing centre-back and defender [but] that physicality, he really struggles.

"He's not one of the fans' favourites so if for a deal to be struck it would make sense.

"First of all you're getting Ben off the wage structure. That might allow the manager to go and wheel and deal a little bit.

"Do I see Ben Davies, with everybody fit and capable, being in that Rangers starting XI? I don't think so.

"And at this stage of his career he needs to go and play week-in week-out.

"So that sounds a good deal to me and I think it would make sense all round to be honest."

Ben Davies featured heavily in his first Rangers season but then fell out of favour.

Chris Davies to land Rangers defender at St. Andrew's

Whether Davies was one of those is unclear when the Belgian started him in the 0-0 draw at Hearts on the opening day (3 August), but the 29-year-old's performance in that game was uncertain enough to justify him moving on.

There is less than a week for the space on the wage bill to be put to use and further exits will be needed to strengthen in multiple areas.
